US Airways and Delta Airlines Report a Very Profitable 2011

Signalling the continued profitability and demand for new pilots, US Airways (US) reported 2011 net income of $71 million, down from reported profits in 2010. The earnings result nevertheless marked the carrier’s second consecutive year in the black despite a steep rise in spending on fuel.

JetBlue Airways Reports Passenger Traffic Continues to Surge in December

JetBlue Airways Corporation reported an encouraging 14.3% year-over-year increase in traffic for the month of December. Airline traffic is measured in revenue passenger miles, which is the measure of one mile flown by one passenger.

Business Travel Steadily Growing

Business travelers are very important to the continued profitability of the Airline Industry, and the growth of Business Travel will spur the forecasted expansion of the Airlines and the continuing need for new pilots. Business travel finished 2011 with stronger growth than expected and the industry will see steady expansion in 2012 that is greater than anticipated GDP growth, according to the latest Business Travel Quarterly Outlook. The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), producer of the Quarterly Outlook reported that despite the uncertainties in the global economy, the business travel environment will remain healthy going forward.

Spirit Airlines Orders 75 A320s, including 45 A320neos

Spirit Airlines has finalized an agreement to purchase 75 Airbus A320 aircraft, consisting of 45 A320neos and 30 A320s, previously announced at the Dubai Airshow in November of last year. The purchase further expands the need for new airline pilots to fly these aircraft as well as those purchased by the airline industry around the world over the next decade.

US Airways, Alaska Airlines Report Spike in December Passenger Traffic

US Airways said Thursday that its passenger revenue per available seat mile rose 11% in December. US Airways also said Thursday that its passenger traffic rose 3.6 percent in December as more people flew to their destinations during the busy holiday season. US Airways also began hiring new pilots this month as the airline industry is expecting a 5% growth that is forecast to last for the foreseeable future.

FAA Grants American Airlines Permission to use iPads as Electronic Flight Bags
